Getting your art out there

Get Your Art Out There!
"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." Zig Ziglar

This saying has stood out to me for a long time because it has a few components – all of which are important for art and life! For me these components are:

1.Get started – now
2.Get your art 'out there' in the public domain
3.Surround yourself with people who want you to win

Get started
Everyone has dreams, it's just that the people that make them a reality – get started – and they get started now. They don't put things off or keep planning or wait till tomorrow. That's like waiting till all the traffic lights are green before you head off over to the other side of town. Traffic doesn't work that way and neither does realizing your dreams. It's more about getting started and knowing you will learn along the way.

Get your art 'out there' in the public domain
It's normal to be a little self-conscious about your work, especially in the early stages. However, if you want to progress, learn and become more competent, then getting your art out there is a key part of that. Otherwise, why are you doing this?

3.Surround yourself with people who want you to win
Now that you have started, and are getting your art out into the public domain you are going to get feedback and if you are like me it will be a mix of feedback you like, with some dollops of feedback that, at least initially, you may prefer not to hear! In my view both are important - you can learn from both.

However, the title of this component isn't feedback – it's surround yourself with people who want you to win. And that means not so much the people who always give you the 'positive' feedback, but also give you well-meaning feedback on what they really think – because in my experience, those are the people who genuinely want you to win. And that's who you want on your team.

Cheers – Blair
